My Morning Routine

A Day In The Life - My Morning Routine.jpg

If you follow me on Instagram, you've probably seen my #ITGTopShelfie. For those of you who don't keep up with Into the Gloss (and you SO should), this is a chance for readers to be featured on the site by entering pics of their favorite products on their shelf. And it's as simple as 'gramming a quick pic and tagging #ITGTopShelfie and @intothegloss.

I've been thinking about sharing some of my routines with you guys for awhile now, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to go into depth on some of my favorite beauty products that help me look fresh, even on the earliest of mornings.

I do enjoy a lazy Sunday here and there, but I'm actually a morning person at heart. However, this doesn't mean I don't still need a little beauty pick-me-up. I tend to go for a natural look, especially if I'm waking up early. Not only does this help me to compact my "going out" makeup routine into a few simple steps, but I also find that it's the most appropriate look to wear during the earliest hours of the day. Sometimes it's just too early for too-bright tones, and it can look overdone. However, I always pack a fun lipstick in my purse to use later in the day or as I move from one venue to the next.

The first thing I grab in the morning is tinted moisturizer. It's an absolute must. And I always try to pick one with SPF.

***Just because you can't see the sun doesn't mean it's not having its way with your skin.***

Another trick I sometimes find useful is mixing my liquid foundation with my favorite moisturizer. The ratio I use is about one part moisturizer and three parts foundation. Any more and the foundation starts to look a little too cakey for my taste.

I next move to my eyes, which need a little help in the morning. I usually pick muted earthy tones or a dark brown. The eyeshadow pictured above is from an Italian company, Kiko Cosmetics, which I fell in love with when I visited Italy a few years back. The prices are irresistible and the quality is super impressive - one of the reasons I'm dying to go back to beautiful Italia. I also like Almay's smoky eye trio, which is my go-to when I can't get my hands on my favorite Kiko shadows.

As far as mascara goes, I'm totally indifferent. Shocking, I know. I just haven't found any brands that stand above the rest yet. I'm currently using Almay, but any drugstore buy usually does the trick. I find that it's less important what brand of mascara you use, but rather how you apply it. (Anybody have any brands they swear by? Leave your suggestions below so I can try!)

I always make sure to start at the base of my eyelash and then jiggle the brush sideways and up. I do this a few times until my lashes are completely coated. And this is of course after I curl them, because stiff and straight is just not cute.

I'm also a huge, emphasis on HUGE, fan of tinted lip balm. The subtle color is perfect for early mornings. No try-hards here. I like this brand particularly, even though I lost mine the day after I bought it. But it made such a good impression that I'm already planning to invest in another.

Tinted lip balm just about wraps up my morning makeup routine, but there's always additional bases to cover (given that I'm not running late or skipping primping for a morning Starbucks run). I'm super picky about my hair and I try to treat it delicately when possible, so sea salt spray is an absolute lifesaver. Sometimes I'll spray it on my naturally straight hair, but I prefer to sleep with my hair in a braid overnight to develop a few waves before applying the spray (when I remember). This gives the locks both more texture and volume.

Once I've got hair and makeup covered, I'll spritz a bit of my favorite perfume on my wrists and neck. I love this spray in particular because it's feels super sophisticated, yet still fun.

I actually just got up to reapply after writing that. I have a perfume problem.

I also like to pack miniature bottles in my purse so I can reapply throughout the day, since I have yet to find a perfume that doesn't fade within a few hours.

Lastly, I need a lil' moisture before I walk out the door. It's still snowing in New York, so I apply a few drops of argan oil to the backs of my hands. It soaks up quickly and I'm ready to go!

What's your morning routine? If there's anything I'm missing out on please share!!

xx,
